John D'Couto, MSW subscribes to the notion that we all have the ability to create a life that we deem worth living for ourselves. He believes that cultivating greater awareness and understanding of our emotions is a key foundation for achieving this. John finds Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to be highly effective in helping people not only become more attuned to their inner experiences but also develop tangible tools to manage emotions skillfully, build healthier relationships, and move toward a life that feels more balanced, meaningful, and aligned with their personal values.
John received his Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Toronto and his Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from Toronto Metropolitan University. John has multiple years of experience in both community and hospital settings, particularly working with adolescents and their families facing acute mental health challenges. John has received intensive DBT training and has been trained in other modalities including Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), as well as Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). Outside of the therapy room, John is super passionate about music, sports, being active, and spending time with his loved ones.
Favourite DBT Skill
"One of my favourite DBT skills is Distracting with 'Wise Mind ACCEPTS'. What I love most about Distracting is how versatile, flexible, and practical it can be. I'm a huge fan of how within the skill, we are given so many avenues to support us in tolerating distress and that there are countless ways in which we can uniquely explore these avenues in our everyday lives. I even came to realize upon my learning of DBT, that I was actually using this skill in my own life prior to learning the skill. I believe this skill helps us build emotional endurance, all while being tied together by a memorable acronym."
